Here are a few regularly asked questions and answers about MOTH.

What inspires you?

Simply being outdoors - I love NZ fauna and flora, colours from nature…

Life is inspiring.

Where do you get your design inspiration?

I’m a truly visual person so I am constantly noticing the world around me, whether I’m at home, shopping, reading magazines or books, outside with nature – anywhere!  A little creative buzzy thing happens and it’s quite thrilling at the time.

How did it all begin?

Originally I was working for the previous owners of this business which mainly made scarves and ties…when they retired I inherited it, introduced the other products and changed the name to MOTH.

Where does the name come from?

MOTH derives from the original fibre we worked with – silk. The silkworm does all the work and then turns into a moth…we take the silk, do lovely things to it and it turns into MOTH!

Do you do everything at the MOTH workshop?

We don’t do everything here; sewing is really not my thing anymore. I used to design and sew all my own clothes when I was a teenager – many years ago!

What do you do?

Everything else! It all starts when I create a design and samples. Then, when we are actually producing a line, I make the screens, cut the fabric and do the printing. After that the pieces go off to the sewers (who all live locally) and when the finished items come back I do the ironing, packing, & dispatch!

What fabrics do you work with?

We work with natural fibres, linen, cotton, silk rayon, wool and, more recently, leather

What are you working on at the moment?

At the moment we are developing a leather bag with a unique laser etched MOTH design on the front of it. We are working on cost at the moment, leather is very expensive to work with.

Describe your products

At MOTH we create a range of functional interior and personal accessories, bags, purses, merino scarves, hats, gloves, cotton, cushions and decorative throws. We have a unique style; I design and print here in the workshop launching new design and product to the range twice each year, giving the range a constant fresh look on a regular basis, and moving quickly to current design trends. All MOTH products are handmade here in New Zealand.

Describe your style

My style is contemporary, funky and casual…I incorporate all of those things in my designs for people who like to be a little different

Where is MOTH?

MOTH is based on the edge of a small rural town called Helensville. Helensville is on the Kaipara Harbour, which is the biggest natural harbour in the Southern Hemisphere. We are 45mins from Auckland – traffic permitting!

Where can we buy MOTH products?

You can buy our products directly from us, just make contact via the website…or if you want to do real life shopping see our stockist list.

Dreams for the future?

The dream for the future is to grow the business by exporting MOTH product into other parts of the world and being able to create more employment for local people. I would love for MOTH to be a little bit bigger so I can have someone doing the daily production tasks, freeing me up more for design and development and overseeing the running of the business – and not counting zips anymore!
